In An American Absurdity, I will show what really does not make sense to me. With a felony conviction, I cannot get jobs in fields such as in the medical industry (doctor), or real estate sales, or insurance sales, or as an attorney in most states, because felons cannot get licenses or certification because of state laws.
FELONS Cannot Get Certain Jobs but Can Become a US President
And that is An American Absurdity!
For instance, in 1981 when I began college, I wanted to become a doctor or a lawyer.
While at the Georgia Diagnostic Classification Center in Jackson, Georgia for the Department of Corrections, I took a battery of psychological and academic test given to all prisoners that helps the administration determine where to place them. In other words, what level of custody and security is needed to control them while in prison.
After the test results, I spoke to a psychologist who reviewed my scores. He asked, “Do you know what type of people make these kind of scores?”
And when I responded, no, he then said, “Doctors and Lawyers.”
I wanted to become either one; however, a year later I spoke with a college guidance counselor and was disheartened when he told me that my felony convictions would prevent me from getting license in the State of Georgia, so I chose psychology as my major and sociology as a minor.
Then after my release, I worked for a vacuum cleaner company and took top office sales on my first week on the job. Afterwards, an insurance agency and a real estate agency wanted to hire me. And then I learned that my felony convictions prohibited me from getting a license to sell insurance and real estate in Georgia.
Subconsciously, I don’t guess I could stand the pressure and got tired of feeling cheated, so I reverted to criminal behavior: I didn’t need a license or certification for that field, but I should have become a politician or run for Presidency.
Wayne T. Dowdy for President: Just Joking. I Wouldn’t Want the Job
I was NOT joking when I wrote the above that my criminal record prevented me from getting some jobs and licenses needed for professions. And that is still true today, even though my last arrest and conviction was in 1988.
Before I walked out the prison gates on August 28, 2018, I had posted Seeking a Real Job https://straightfromthepen.com/2023/05/21/seeking-a-real-job/ and then updated it after I was released and had found out that my credentials didn’t matter because I had grown older and most companies wanted younger people and those without criminal records.

WALMART Refused to Hire Me as a Spark Driver Because of My Criminal History
But having felony convictions do NOT prevent me from running for President of the most powerful country in the world, as is evident on the 2024 voting ballots, and former President Donald Trump’s recent felony convictions. Now that is absurd!
(I’m not saying that because I feel that he should not be allowed to run for presidency because of those conviction)
HMMM, if elected as President of the United States, I wonder if my felony convictions would prevent me carrying the Nuclear Football (briefcase that the President can use to order nuclear weapons to be fired), or from having access to the Nuclear Button to fire nuclear weapons.
Firearm laws do prevent me from possessing a firearm or ammunition, but I don’t think firearm laws say anything about having access to the button that could destroy mankind as we know it.
AND IF THAT IS NOT AN AMERICAN ABSURDITY, ….
Read this personal magazine and tell me if you would vote for me to become president. 🙂
Yes, I, Wayne T. Dowdy, was arrested August 18, 1988. In The Price of Change inside the personal magazine, Essays & More Straight from the Pen, I tell the story.
